this aircraft was flown by W/C HRA Edwards, CO of 53 Sqn as escort to convoy SL139. Weather bad with cloud base at 300 ft. Attacked a U-boat and met by flak, with no obvious damage. Left the convoy afterdaybreak on 21 Nov, three engines stopped simultaneously at 300 ft in base of cloud near Lands End. Ditched hard, aircraft broke aft of wings. Three other crew members got out but v seriously injured. Dinghy was difficult to release, partially inflated. W/C Edwards searched for other members without success. He was picked up the following morning.
