Hi Gary,
Thanks for your response ( and thank George too) but I still have a problem with the FR being ground gunnery as my fathers log book shows them all as being flying exercises in a Blenheim. I will try to attach a copy of the page in the log book.

thanks

Brian

Hi Brian,
I have just received a reply to an email to one TOM QUINN at www.airgunners.co.uk,and I quote

FR means Free
B " Beam
UT " Under Tail

In my brothers logbook FRGG relates to an Air to Ground exercise and KG to a Cine Gun Exercise.
With regard to the meaning of FR,the plot thickens
Regards Mike

Mike,
Thanks for that, I now have a clearer picture of what all these abreviations mean. I think Gary can now add a lot of these to his abbreviations list.
Could you also thank Tom Quinn - sorry for the delay in replying but I did not notice the response.

regards

Brian

I'm not convinced about FR - Free, while I don't disagree with B & UT. FR seems more likely to be Fixed Relative than Free. It's a bit of a conundrum as Fixed Relative came from George Wootton who runs the AGA Torquay and Devon and Free came from Tom in AGA. I'd personally rather go with George as I've never known him to get anything wrong when it comes to his memory.

Hi All,
Have a look at www.jamesmacnaught.co.uk/logbook.htm
He gives meanings of some abbreviations e.g.
FRAUT Free astern under tail
FRTD Free target drogue
FRBST Free beam starboard tail
FRQT Free gun astern
QXU Drogue firing

Could it be that every Air Gunner, or possibly gunnery schools had their own abbreviations?
Regards
Mike

Mike,
Thanks for that, I think that FR in my fathers log book does mean free but it appears that, as you say, there were other abreviations around used by gunnery schools and gunners themselves

regards
